This is a wonderful energy technique which , one of many originated by Paul E Dennison and Gail E Dennison in their Edu-Kinesthetics Learning-Through-Movement Series, or better known as – Brain Gym ®
Drawing the Lazy 8 – or infinity symbol – enables the reader to cross the visual midline without interruption, thus activating both right and left eyes and integrating the right and left visual fields.
This exercise helps with:
relaxation of the eyes, neck and shoulders while focussing
improved depth perception
improved centring, balance and co-ordination.
This exercise is very helpful in the following occupations where these skill are needed:
Paying attention to detail, communicating effectively, organising and completing errands, reading without eyestrain, writing legibly, speed-reading, driving with comfort., developing rapport and writing legibly, co-ordinating processes at the keyboard and preventing eyestrain at the computer, expressing leadership skills, conducting interviews, comfortable air travel, filling out repetitive paperwork.
This exercise can be done in several ways:
1. Extend one arm straight out in front of you with the thumb pointed upwards to the ceiling, Focussing your eyes on your thumb ‘air draw’ a figure of 8 with your thumb. Do 3 full figure 8, then change to the other hand and repeat the process. Then place both hands together and focussing on both thumbs, repeat the process
2. Point your right arm out in front of you, at shoulder height. Now turn your head towards that arm and connect your nose with you upper arm – as in an elephant trunk shape. Now looking along your extended arm, ‘air weave’ a figure of 8 with your arm. Do this 3 times. Change arms and repeat the process.
3. With a crayon or pencil or piece of chalk in your right hand, draw a very large figure 8 or infinity sign on a large piece of paper or the black/chalk board keeping your attention on the crayon or pencil or chalk. Do this 3 times. Now change hands and repeat the process. Now keeping both hands together and holding the crayon or pencil or chalk in both your hands, repeat the process again.
4. Holding a streamer on a stick in front of you with your right hand, simply wave a figure of 8 or the infinity sign in front of you 3 times. Change hands and repeat the process. Now hold the streamer in both hands and repeat it again.
